Well, was my car. We sold it. I could never think of a single name for this car, but I did manage to narrow it down to three. My LAST physics final EVER. I feel like I just lost 500 lbs. I feel great! I'm pretty sure I failed that test. I made somewhat-educated guesses on EVERY SINGLE QUESTION. I'll be surprised if I manage to scrape up 5 measly points on the whole test. I have never seen problems like that in my life. I'm pretty sure they were impossible to solve. But you know what? I feel good. I haven't felt like this in ages. It's kinda like that feeling when you take out that big wad of junk you've had in your pocket all day. Or like when you take off wet socks. Yeah, it feels good. And the sky outside the testing building was so incredibly blue! It was amazing! Everything is so much more beautiful now. I feel like I can breathe again... Ok, it wasn't that bad. I did learn a lot... But it sure has been a very long, physics-filled year, and I am very glad that is now over.... I thought I should just throw that out there.... What I don't like however, is when you know you are doing your calculus right, but the online computer program with which you have to submit your homework keeps telling you your answer is wrong. I mean, come on people! We all know that the indefinite integral of the acceleration function -9sin(-3t) with respect to time equals -3cos(-3t) + C. And with the given condition that at t=0, the velocity function equals 1, then we should be able to conclude that C = 4, therefore the final correct answer is -3cos(-3t)+4. Am I right?!?!??? Seriously, you do it and see what answer you get because mine obviously isn't working.

Hesitation

Do you ever have those moments when you're all alone, but there are people you don't know all around you, and you really need to do something, but you hesitate because they might think you're nerdy?

Well, I just had one. He ran across the street into the parking lot next to us. Well, he wasn't really running... it was more of a jog. He had long slow strides, was wearing a black hoody over his head, and was carrying what looked strangely like a purse in his left arm... kind of like a football. My first thought was, "Dude! That guy just stole somebody's purse!" But that theory quickly died because he wasn't hardly running at all. It was like he was in slow motion.... But then, another man came into view. A shorter, chubbier man who looked like he was wearing clothes indicative of a police officer or security guard. He was also running.... or at least trying to. His velocity was much slower than that of the first man, but he looked like he was pushing hard. He even grabbed what looked like a radio on his chest and spoke into it as he trudged along.....clearly calling for back up.... So I was right the first time! This was a highway purse robbery! That guy really did steal somebody's purse, and he really was jogging to get away from the authorities- JOGGING because well, that's all he needed to do. He just sort of looked like he was merely taking a leisurely prance through the parking lot, and not like he was a criminal on the run.

It was kinda funny.

At least I thought so.

But then again, I guess it wasn't really all that funny for whoever the victim was... or the officer.... I hope the culprit was apprehended in the end.

But I hope we can all learn a lesson from this one.... For all you thieves out there:
You can jog, but you can't hide.

Are you serious!?

So KJZZ is no longer showing any regular season Jazz games. I did manage to get a job though; between now and the last time I posted anything. I worked at a lovely little company which shall remain nameless, but I quickly became FedUp with it and have since moved on.... I'm thinking outside the BOX if you will..... Yeah, that TRAILER LOADED WITH PACKAGES has been SHIPPED, if you know what I'm saying.....

Yeah it wasn't working too well with school and all, but I was able to save most of what I made which was great. I wasn't crazy about it, but overall it was a pretty good job.

Now my job is to get the money my friend owes me for mowing all those lawns for him.

The MVMM

This summer has been pretty darn lazy. For most of the time I have been unemployed. "Funemployed".... yeah ok, it was a pretty fun most of the time. However, two wonderful and temporary job opportunities were offered to me and I GLADLY excepted them.

I have two friends who are big on the lawn mowing scene. They are the grass giants, the trimming tycoons of their neighborhoods. Anybody's who's anybody has their lawn cut by these teenaged entrepreneurs. Respectively, they dominate the lawn business in their own wards.

A few weeks ago, Friend 1 went on vacation and allowed me to mow his lawns for the week. These last couple of weeks Friend 2 has been out of town and has hired me to do his lawns in his absence. I'm a lawn mowing substitute. It's a great job. All together I mowed 21 lawns at an average of $23.43 each, and at an average rate of $18.13 an hour. Not bad. Combined with the two lawns of my own that I mow, I made more like $20.35 an hour during those 3 weeks.

I did have to borrow my mother's minivan, take out the back seat, and stuff the lawn mower and other equipment in there, but it all worked out awesomely.

So if you ever need someone to mow your lawn for you while your out of town, just give me a call. I am the MiniVan Mower Man................ Yes! That's what I'll be when I grow up! A substitute mower!

Discovery

Today for lunch I had leftovers. I had the opportunity to be a Student Body Officer, a Madrigal, be in the Concert Choir, Wind Ensemble, and play football. And on top of all that I took AP English and AP Calculus BC without a lab. My life got a little hectic at times (especially at the beginning of the year), but it was so much fun!

I'll never forget Stake Youth Conference in June at Washington Academy. The food was AMAZING. We ate like kings and played basketball all day long. Never try to wrestle after eating loads of Italian food.

I'll never forget how awesome it felt to be selected as an SBO and to go to Park City with the rest of them and party it up during the summer. There they fed us and we got to know each other and we pretty much planned the whole year in advance. I miss June.

I'll never forget the feeling of finishing my Eagle Project. "Let's Hang On" sounds best in a chapel I think.

I'll never forget what it felt like to start on the varsity Football team my senior year. We weren't the best team, but we still managed to have a good time. We even won a few.... 3 to be exact. I learned the importance of Trusting My Brother, and I cried my eyes out after the last game. Who knew I loved it so much?

I'll never forget the feeling at the homeless shelter. We took buses down there to pick up our guests for the Homeless Dinner. I was in charge, but I hardly did any work. The school's clubs donated everything and there were more volunteers there than we had work to do. That was a great experience.

I'll never, ever, forget how I felt as we delivered the gifts to the Neighborhood House children. To see their penetrating smiles and excitement was worth every second of work I put into that project. I chose the right SBO job, that's for sure. That experience changed me forever.

I'll never forget how fun it was to have a Madrigal gig almost every night in December. That was huge in making me a better singer and in allowing me to bond with the other 31. That's how the holiday season should be.

I'll never forget Jr. Jazz. Ha ha... We were HORRIBLE, yet somehow we managed to stay perfect.... A perfect 0-7. We could have been so good! Oh well.

I'll never forget having lunch sectionals every B day with the Madrigal Men. I loved those so much. Any time I got to sing in such an amazing group was a good time. We worked hard, and it payed off when we got into our festival season.

I'll never forget the Music Trip to San Francisco. I'll definitely never forget that indescribable feeling when the Madrigals walked onstage to a deafening roar of applause. I felt like a rockstar. After our performances that day, I knew I never wanted to have to end Madrigals, and I realized just how blessed I was to be able to be a part of it this year.

I'll never forget my final Madrigal Concert. We sang all of our favorites and it was a total blast. I'll never forget trying hard not to cry during "Marianne." I'll never forget singing "You Are the New Day" with my brother. And I'll never forget how hard it was to sing our final song "Somewhere." I bawled like a baby after we finished. I knew I would. Madrigals was my all-time favorite. I loved it so much! The friendships I made and the growth I experienced are irreplaceable. I think Madrigals is what I will miss most.

I'll never forget graduation. I made it! I did it! I survived! I loved it. I truly was blessed with many amazing experiences and opportunities. I'll miss high school, but I'm ready to move on. Thank you everyone who supported me and helped me through it all.

Um... Technically you lost

This last Thursday, the 19th day of February, 2009, we had a Churchball game.... well, 2 games actually. This was the second round of the post-season "just for fun" stake tournament. The 6th ward got first seed for going an undefeated 5-0 in the regular season. The 3rd ward got second for going 4-1 (only losing to the 6th). We, the Woods Cross 2nd Ward got third seed for going 3-2. First, at 7:00 we played the 3rd ward in the semi-final. In the regular season we lost to them by one point. On Thursday we beat them by 5. I had 12 points. It was a good game. We won and so we got to play a second game against the so named "Stake Champions" 6th ward at 8:00 sharp. A team of like 12 that had sat watching us- a team of 7- work hard to prevail over the 3rd ward.

For most of the game, we were pretty evenly matched with this team of semi-pubescent prima donnas, but we were all so tired from the last game and it was getting hard. They led us by almost 10 at half-time. But we got our second wind and we faught back, evening the score. Some very ridiculus calls were made... aparently you have to stand perfectly straight and upright while dribbling the ball as to not lower your shoulder to speed up past a defender... and apparently if an opposing player goes for your pump-fake and lands on your head and racks himself it's a foul on you.... and apparently if you get set up and draw one of the most beautiful charges ever seen by human eyes, and the shooter gets injured and stops the game for a few minutes, then the home-cookin' ref will just stand there looking dazed and confused and give the ball back to the offense and give no one a foul....

(Deep breaths...) Ok, Willey fouled out because of his head, and Trevor was ejected because he took his jersey off, and we were left with just 5 people out there on the court, behind by 2 points. No calls seemed to be going our way, and we couldn't get any rebounds, and I was getting very frustrated because we should've been winning, and then I got fouled over the back. I don't remember how many seconds were left in the game, but it wasn't a lot. We were in the penalty so I got the ball at the free throw line to shoot 1 and 1. I was angry. I believe in certain situations, especially sports and especially basketball, anger helps me perform. I glared at the ref passing me the ball. I glared at the ball. I glared at the rim. I shot. I made it. I could hear my mom cheering for me. Yes! I did the same thing again. I made it again. I glared at the scoreboard... 49-49. We were goin to overtime baby.

Overtime was 3 minutes long. We traded baskets. I was fouled again. I made two free throws again. Landon was fouled. He made two free throws. We didn't get rebounds. They scored some more. Our plan was to get me to the free throw line because I was feelin it. Once again, we were down by 2. I brought the ball across half-court. Nobody was fouling me. I penetrated a bit, the baseline got shut off and so I pulled up for a jumper. Immediately my right leg seized up in a humungous cramp. I fell to the floor and looked up to see my shot miraclously go in. But I knew something was definitely wrong. My leg was literally stuck in a flexed, toe extended downward position. It was insane! It hurt and it was very scary. I writhed in pain, holding my leg as a circle formed around me. I was afraid to get up because my leg wouldn't move or function as normal. Eventually, with help, I got up and limped to the free throw line. They had called a foul, the basket had counted, and I was supposed to shoot one shot. I knew I couldn't shoot if I couldn't even stand up right. They were gonna let Willey come in for me and shoot, but I knew he had fouled out, and I got my leg back to a normal position so I said no. I would do it myself. I was alright.

I missed the shot and as I tried to move my leg seized up again. I was done for the night. They let Willey go in, but time was pretty much gone and we are all tied up again at 58 I think. I don't remember if this all happened in the first or the second overtime, but the important thing is that we did go into double overtime. Nobody could seem to score. It was sloppy and hurried on both ends for both teams, and I had to watch from the sidelines. David, bless his heart, hit a clutch jumper near the end to put us up 60-59. And then with everyone missing free throws and rebounds going wild a foul was called on Willey with .3 seconds left.

I was very mad, limping back and forth on the sideline. I hadn't done all that work to lose. I hadn't scored a career-high 33 points to watch the amazing 6th ward get away with another one.... They got two foul shots.... They missed them both. Time ran out and WE WON!!! I had never felt so satisfied with a win before. Oh my goodness. And I was so proud of everyone on the team. We did it! We won despite the ref(s). We won despite the fact they were "Stake Champions," and the tournament was "just for fun." Psh! We should be the Stake Champions. We played 2 games and 2 overtimes in 2 hours and won them both. We beat every team. We earned it.

But hold the phone..... Word on the street is that the 6th ward "technically won" because we had to forfeit to let Willey play for the last couple of minutes when I could not. To that I say, "Shut up." Last time I checked, 60 > 59. Tell me if I'm wrong. I will go to my grave saying that we won fair and square.

And to all those unbelievers out there............ Um..... Technically you LOST......... because well..................... you did. Period. End of story.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ryanhinckley.blogspot.com/2009/02/um-technically-you-lost.html' title='Um... I am a lineman, though I probably shouldn't be because I'm kinda too small. I line up and go head to head with humungous other fat kids who usually have 50 or more pounds on me. Sometimes it hurts. And it makes me mad that they are beating me just because they have more mass than me. It's really frustrating. I play guard on offense, and D-Tackle or D-End on defense. But enough about that. Let's get on to the games.

Ben Lomond, Aug 22, 2008
I don't start on varsity except for on the punt and kick-return teams, but I did expect to play some guard, and I did. In fact I probably played more than I thought I would. And I did good, believe it or not. The whole team was doing good. At half time the score was 25-7 WX. I played the most in the second half however (can you tell I get excited when I get playing time?), and that's when we just went wild. I honestly got hit harder earlier that week at practice than I did once in this game. I got a phantom holding call on a 29 sweep at the end of the game. Turns out the ref had told my coach that he wasn't gonna let us score any more, so he was going to call penalties. Well, it didn't work so well because we scored again in the next two plays. After the game we came together on the the WX, lifted our helmets up just like we had said we would, and got a wildcat call as a team. The final score was 65-14 WX.

(JV) Syracuse, Aug 28, 2008
Yeah, so because I don't start on varsity I get to play JV. I'm not quite sure it's entirely legal for a senior to play JV, but I guess it must be if I'm doing it. We did it last year with some seniors. And we were good. 5-1 in region play. I came into it really mad because I didn't want to have to play JV, and I was playing alongside a line of sophomores and juniors who didn't quite know everything so well. Yeah, sophomores. Just like my age group, the juniors this year lost quite a few players and their best ones are all starting varsity. In fact 4 of the 5 starting offensive lineman for varsity are juniors. But anyway- I had lots of fun. I started as guard and even as tackle on defense. It was awesome- I got a sack and I even batted down a pass, it was so sweet. We were winning the whole game until they tied us up at 19-19 and we went into overtime. We got the ball first and scored a TD. We then shut them out and won 26-19.

@ Syracuse, Aug 29, 2008
The team is coached by the former WX coach the year before last year. He's a nice guy, I really liked him. These guys hit a lot harder than the last team. On punt I got held every single time. I think I even got the call once. But I fought as much as I could and still it wasn't enough. It was so frustrating. I got a couple plays as end on defense. And I got a few at the very end as guard. Our defense did awesome but our offense got a total of 94 yards. We lost 0-14.

(JV) @ West, Sep 4, 2008
I wasn't feelin it very much this game. I was only supposed to play 1 half according to coach's orders, so I sat out the first half. Well, I played some d-end in the first quarter but I did pretty much horrible and I didn't get back in. And I was on kick-off and kick-return. We led the game 14-0 at halftime I think, but we let them back in, they went on a 24-0 run, and we lost 14-24. I didn't do very good at all.

West, Sep 5, 2008
I came into this one fired up. I was ready to go. I did pretty well on punt- way better than last week. I even think I did better on kick-return. We scored the first touchdown, and then, by a stroke of pure genius from our coach, completed a fake PAT to a man in the endzone for a 2-point conversion. IT WAS SO SWEET!!! I seriously did not think it was going to work, but it did. The holder flipped it over the line to the tight end while the kicker pretended to kick it. Awww man.... I was in at right defensive end when West scored. I lost contain and they gained a touchdown. And then they went for it and barely got over the line for the 2-point conversion. I was so mad. Then they scored again making it 8-15. We just kinda fell apart after that. We fumbled it a couple of times and we just couldn't get it done. I got in as left guard about mid-fourth quarter. We marched up the field and scored on a 128 waggle. It was a thing of beauty. However, we missed the extra point making the score 14-15. We got the ball back with about 50 seconds left in the game and I was still in as guard. We ran pass play after pass play, getting a couple of first downs. The HUGE linebacker that we had talked about all week stunted on me and I put my helmet right in his crotch. He never stunted again. I was proud of myself. But time ran out and we lost 14-15.

Varsity's record is now 1-2
JV's is 1-1

This means WAR

About this time every year an upward surge in the spider population inside the house occurs. It's pretty intense. You don't have to look very hard to find one of these disgusting arthropods. And every year we get a species of spider that I like to call Harold. I don't know exactly what kind they are but they are HUGE, light brownish, and wicked fast little buggers. They are characterized by their large size and a light stripe which runs vertically down their bodies.

I found one earlier today right here in the computer room. When I tried to kill it, it ran underneath the brown rockingchair and I couldn't get to it. I came back a while later and there was one out here in the open, but it eluded me again, escaping to its good old chair. I think there's a colony under there. I gave up and began watching TV. After a while I noticed a specimen out in the hall, a foot or so from the computer room door. This time he wasn't going to get away. I was feeling quite homicidal. I grabbed one of my sister's shoes lying around and I struck at it. I must've hit it on the side or something because it popped up into the air and did some flips. Then, its mangled body wriggling in pain, I made my fatal blow, killing it. It may sound harsh, but hey, this is my philosophy: You're in the house, you die. Plain and simple.

An hour or so later, I walked into the computer room once more only to find a second Harold spider. This time it was at the east end of the room. This one was FAT. I made a move towards it and it tried to flee, but my skills with a shoe were too much for the pitiful creature. This one pretty much exploded; it was so BIG. Its opisthosoma (butt) was bloated and (as one could easily tell from the messy death) full of pus. I think it was with child. I don't really know why this guy was full of a nasty dark yellowish liquid, but it got everywhere. It was disgusting.

A couple years ago we managed to capture two or so of these Harold spiders. One of them was actually carrying tons of tiny little baby spiders on its back. We were lucky to catch them all in one swoop. I watched them through the glass of the jar for hours. It was fascinating. But fascinating or not- the return of the Harold can ultimately mean only one thing: ..................................................................WAR!!! Bring it on.

HA HA HA (evil/triumphant laugh)

Back in September of last year, I boldly stood and declared a promise to the silent rebel everywhere: "I WILL pass this AP Test, and I will do it with an Eleventh Edition!" And so my fate was sealed. Defying all odds, the rampant discouragement of my peers, and the resentful persistence of my teacher that one could only survive the course with an updated 15th (I think it was) edition of the textbook, I saved $68 and bought the 11th edition, passing the course and eventually the AP test. OK, so the book was a few pages off of everyone else's, and it didn't have all those DBQ's in the back of it, but it was exactly the same as the one I needed- text, pictures, and everything. I was quite proud of my unappreciated textbook. Just today I received my AP Test results and I pulled off a 3. Good enough for me, considering I made up most of 2 of the 3 essays, and I didn't confidently complete the multiple choice section. I won this battle, and I did it with an 11th edition. Ha ha ha. I really do love that book.

Tuesday

It's Tuesday (if you haven't already guessed). In 35 minutes it will actually be Wednesday, but right now it's still Tuesday. I didn't do a whole lot today. I didn't go to school because well... I don't have to. Isn't summer amazing that way? I mowed the lawn and did a wonderful job. So good in fact that my parents are gonna let me do it again every week for the rest of the summer! I took a test for my online Financial Literacy class. I took it 4 times until I got 100%. I went to speed training and pretty much almost died by the time I was done. I was so tired it was hard to drive home. Then, thankfully when I did get home, we had pancakes and eggs cooked in hashbrowns for dinner. It was divine. I think I probably ate half of the egg stuff to myself. I love eggs. In fact, I ate 9 eggs yesterday. Yep, and yesterday the microwave broke. Anyway, after dinner I started watching the NBA Finals. I got bored and inspired from that so I went outside to shoot some hoops. I was on fire. I think I grew like an inch because my layup skills were deadly. I couldn't miss around the basket. And then I got excited for Jr. Jazz- which won't even happen until January of 2009 at least. And then I came inside, took out my contacts, did a whole bunch of crunches, and watched the rest of the game. The Celtics lost.... stupid Lakers. Then I took a lovely shower, started cleaning my room, and found a five dollar bill in a birthday card I got last October. Wow. It's been a good day. Tuesdays rock. Usually. Well, at least this one did.

SUMMER!!!!!!

Yay. It's summer time. School is over. No more AP classes or depressing American novels. YES!!!! I am now pretty much a senior. I'm so excited. My senior year is gonna be AWESOME!!!!! I can't wait. I'll be a Student Body Officer and- as revealed by a very much not-expected kidnapping and an intensely wet and blindfolded joy-ride- I'll be a Madrigal too. Yeah, don't ask how it happened. Even I don't know, and I was there when I tried out. I really just wanted to make Concert Choir because I'd never been in a choir class in my life and I wanted to see what it was like, but I put down Madrigals too because I thought I might have a chance. I didn't think I was gonna make it, but the chances were better than last year when I tried out. Turns out I'm a Tenor 2. Whatever that means. I guess I'll find out soon enough. The school year of 2008-2009 is going to be a total BLAST. And football is gonna rock too. Uhhh...
